Tariff Shifts and What They

Mean for U.S. Manufacturers

The global trade environment has entered another turbulent chapter. After implementing sweeping tariffs in early April, the U.S. administration has now paused many of those duties, while doubling down on China and exploring new restrictions on critical sectors like semiconductors and pharmaceuticals.

For buyers of precision components, particularly ground compression springs, these fluctuations create urgency around sourcing decisions, supplier stability, and long-term planning. At Automated Wire Products, we’ve built our operation to offer consistency, regardless of global uncertainty.

April 2025: Where Tariffs Stand Now

On April 9, the White House announced a 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs for all countries except China, reversing much of the earlier implementation from April 5. Most trading partners, including Japan, Taiwan, and the European Union, have reverted to the universal 10% import tariff.

China, however, remains under strict measures. The U.S. tariff rate on Chinese imports has been raised to 125%, following retaliatory actions from Beijing. Chinese officials have also halted exports of rare earth minerals and magnets, disrupting supply chains in sectors like automotive, defense, and aerospace.

Additionally, the administration confirmed on April 14 that it is considering exemptions for certain auto tariffs, providing temporary flexibility for companies shifting manufacturing closer to home. Meanwhile, the U.S. has launched new national security investigations into imports of semiconductors and pharmaceuticals, signaling the potential for more sector-specific tariffs under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act.

Taken together, these developments signal not just market volatility, but a broader realignment of global supply strategies.

Impact on Spring Manufacturing

Increased tariffs often translate to rising material costs, longer lead times, or sudden sourcing shifts. Manufacturers without diversified material options or domestic production are especially vulnerable. The uncertainty created by these rapid policy shifts only adds to the pressure.

AWP is built to help customers weather these types of disruptions. We maintain a portfolio of over 300 wire materials – ranging from music wire to stainless steel and specialty chrome alloys – all sourced to meet the latest ASTM specifications. Wire certifications accompany every shipment and are archived permanently, giving our customers full traceability whenever it’s needed.

With strong supplier relationships and inventory controls in place, we keep spring production moving even when global supply lines face interruptions.

Why Domestic Production Matters More Than Ever

Every spring and spring ring we produce is manufactured in the U.S. This means AWP customers aren’t exposed to surprise customs fees, overseas shipping delays, or abrupt policy changes that affect imported goods.

Our automated CNC equipment, video-monitored free length systems, and precision end grinding technology allow us to hit exacting tolerances in high-volume production. We routinely deliver prototypes in 10 days or less and maintain an average four-week lead time on standard orders.

For OEMs in fluid power, municipal equipment, powertrain, and other sectors, this consistency makes a meaningful difference, especially when international suppliers are forced to slow down or recalibrate.

Questions to Consider in a Volatile Market

If you’re evaluating compression spring suppliers during this period of uncertainty, it’s worth asking:

  • Are the materials being used currently tariffed or at risk of new restrictions?
  • Is the supplier’s manufacturing entirely domestic?
  • Can the supplier offer full traceability on every material used?
  • What is their track record for lead times, and how are those times managed?
  • How quickly can production adapt if trade policies change again?

At AWP, these questions are answered through experience, focus, and a clear operational strategy built for reliability.

Consistency When It Counts

While trade headlines dominate the news, your production deadlines haven’t changed. You still need compression springs that meet spec, arrive on time, and support the performance of your larger systems. We’re here to make sure that doesn’t waver.

Our streamlined, U.S.-based process gives you more than a quality spring – it gives you clarity in a time of economic noise. Let’s talk about how we can help you stay resilient in a shifting global trade landscape.
